The Riverview rowing team stormed its way to every team trophy they handed out at the 10-team 48th annual Hebda Memorial Challenge Cup Regatta hosted by the Wyandotte Boat Club Saturday.
The Pirates, who captured first place in seven events, won the women’s title, the men’s title and the overall championship.
Riverview was the only local men’s team among the top three as Dearborn Heights Crestwood and Saline followed the Bucs in the final standings.
Among the women’s teams, Riverview was followed in scoring by Carlson and Grosse Ile.
“Everything seemed to fall into line,” said Riverview Coach Rich Kesor. “The kids came ready to race and ready to compete.”
Riverview won the overall team title for the second straight year and became the first team to win back-to-back girls’ championships.
The Hebda Cup boys’ title was the first for Riverview since 1984.
The Bucs started the day by winning two of the meet’s first three races, the Women’s Novice 4 and the Men’s Novice 8.
Jeremy House, Brad Renner, Kodiak Bodnar, AJ Picciutto, Austin Irving, Ian Reeder, Tim Rigotti, Ethan Molitor, and coxie Christian Tedone crewed the men’s boat and Norma Lee, Zoe Kissel, Samantha Warren, Courtney Armstrong and Coxie Nina Brown rowed for the women.
Riverview then won the Women’s Junior 8 with Emily Powers, Marianne Horsley, Autumn Little, Brittany Jenkins, Cara Charette, Margaret Rausch, Haley Reynolds, Penny Orsargos and coxie Emma Russeau doing the heavy lifting and the Men’s Lightweight 8 with Jamal Davis, Ryan Welsh, Ian Moore, Kyle Wasilewski, Zeke Lynn, Andrew Campbell, Tyler Greg Howarth, Doss and coxie Martin Steffke in the boat.
Norma Lee, Zoe Kissel, Cara Charette, Kate Nelson, Samantha Warren, Emily Pisarzewski, Savannah Liveoak, Courtney Armstrong and coxie Nina Brown then won the Women’s Novice 8.
The Bucs finished their dominant day by taking the Men’s Junior 8 (Ryan Welsh, Josh Werner, Shane Willbanks, Mike Wood, Kyle Wasilewski, Andrew Campbell, Tyler Howarth, Greg Doss and Martin Steffke) and the Men’s lightweight 4 (Caleb Menna, Ian Moore, Jamal Davis, Zeke Lynn and coxie Eric Moore).
Although they did not win races, Kesor said taking second in the Men's Novice 4 and Junior 4 and Women's Junior 4 and Lightweight 4 provided 12 valuable points to help secure the Pirates’ victories.
Roosevelt swept the sculling events, winning both the Men’s and Women’s Varsity 2 races.
Alex Pappas and Josh Simmons were the men’s winners and Sarah Minaugh, Corniela Reiger were the women’s winners.
Roosevelt also won the Men’s Varsity 4 with Alex Pappas, Vincent Pizzo, Josh Simmons, Jake Pitcher and Sarah Pappas doing the honors.
Grosse Ile claimed victory in the Men’s Junior 4 and the Women’s Varsity 4.
Women’s runner-up Carlson got its only first in the Women’s Varsity 8 race with Rebecca Cunningham, Michelle Tooma, Lexy Cantrell, Holly Van Buren, Holly Walus, Tessa Glover, Karlie Arp, Maddie Ayoub and coxie Monica Vint doing the rowing.
The Marauders also scored points with these boats: Women’s Varsity 4 (second, Rebecca Cunningham, Michelle Tooma, Lexy Cantrell, Holly Van Buren and coxie Tim Williams); Men’s Junior 4 (third, Devin Lang, Sean Pacheco, Matt Deihl, Kyle Brunell and coxie Trevor Lazarski); Women’s Novice 4 (third, Karlie Arp, Maddie Ayoub, Breanne Vary, Monica Vint and coxie Logan Farrington; and Men’s Light weight 4 (third, Alex Theeck, Brandon Price, Trevor Lazarski, Logan Farrington and coxie Tim Williams).
Next up for local rowers is the Wyandotte High Schools Regatta set for Saturday back at the Wyandotte Boat Club.
The scoring is different at the Wy-Hi, favoring bigger schools, but Kesor said his Pirates will be there ready to give it their best shot.
“We are going to show up and race or races,” he said. “If it all goes well, we will be in the conversation at the end.”
